The ruling carries particular weight and anxiety for student loan borrowers because they already have one of the most difficult debts to pay off. With skyrocketing tuition costs and stagnant wages, many cannot keep up with payments and face a lifetime of debt. In addition, there is also significant racial inequity in who holds student debt — according to an analysis by The Institute for College Access & Success (TICAS), Black students graduate with nearly twice as much debt as their white counterparts.
