UK Students Skip Meals Due to Living Crisis

A National Union of Students (NUS) survey found that nearly three-quarters of British students were skipping meals and relying on food banks to make ends meet. The findings show a staggering increase from last year’s figures, which revealed that only one-third of surveyed students had gone hungry because of unaffordable living costs.

The research also highlighted the financial pressures young people face, with 63% saying they felt unable to cover basic needs due to rising rent prices, bills and university tuition fees. While student loan debts have been steadily increasing over time, it appears that debtors are not receiving enough money each month to survive without having to cut back elsewhere.

Commenting on the data, NUS President Shakira Martin said: “It’s unacceptable that so many students are going without meals and relying on food banks. This is a direct consequence of the cost of living crisis gripping university towns and cities across the country. It’s time for politicians to realise this isn’t just an issue affecting low-income households, but one which is having a huge impact on the lives of students everywhere.”

Martin called on universities to do more to support those struggling with finances, saying: “Universities must recognise that some members of their student body may be unable to afford essentials such as food and housing, and take steps to ensure they are fully supported during their studies. We need long-term, sustainable solutions to this problem, and universities must take a more active role in finding them.”

The survey findings are yet another reminder of how crucial it is for students to get the financial help they need. If you’re struggling to make ends meet, reach out to your university or student union and ask about available support. With their help, you can combat the cost of living crisis and stay on track with your studies.
