Examples of strategies used include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), problem-solving skills training (PSST), social skills training (SST), anger management, and mindfulness-based practices. CBT is a type of psychotherapy that addresses thoughts and behaviours by identifying patterns to reduce distress and improve functioning. PSST helps students identify problems they face and develop strategies for solving them. SST teaches students how to interact with others more effectively, while anger management promotes healthy ways of expressing emotions. Mindfulness-based practices help promote self-awareness, relaxation, stress reduction, improved concentration and focus, and improved emotional regulation.

School mental health interventions can be used individually or in groups depending on the needs of the student(s). The effectiveness of these interventions relies on the level of commitment from all participants, including school personnel and the student(s). When properly implemented, school mental health interventions can positively impact students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral functioning.
