The report, entitled Education at a Glance, shows that there were only five countries in the study where actual teacher salaries decreased in real terms in at least one level of education. In England, wages fell by more than 6 per cent between 2010 and 2016.
This is in contrast to most other OECD countries, where teacher pay has either remained stable or increased slightly over the same period. The report attributes the decline in England to austerity measures implemented since 2010, which have led to cuts in public spending on education.
Despite this, the report notes that teachers in England still earn relatively high salaries compared to other workers with similar levels of education. The average salary for a teacher in England is around £38,000, which is about 10 per cent higher than the average for all workers with tertiary education.
The report also highlights some positive trends in English education, such as investment in early childhood education has increased significantly in recent years. However, it warns that these gains could be offset by continued cuts to school budgets, likely leading to larger class sizes and fewer teacher resources.
In addition, the report warns that the decline in teacher pay could make it harder to attract and retain high-quality teachers in England, which could hurt educational outcomes in the long term.
The OECD\’s Education at a Glance report is an annual international comparison of national statistics measuring the state of education worldwide.
