The research also indicated that Ofsted inspectors often fail to recognise signs of stress and don’t provide adequate support to those under inspection – leaving teachers feeling unsupported and vulnerable. This has led to increased levels of stress, anxiety and burnout among teachers in England.

These findings are particularly alarming given that prior research has shown that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, with many citing workloads as an important factor. The report called for Ofsted to take urgent action on this issue, highlighting that even in a climate of increased inspection, teachers must be supported and encouraged to take time for themselves – especially if signs of stress are showing.

Although the government is taking steps towards changing the way Ofsted inspections work, it is clear that more needs to be done to ensure that teacher well-being is at the heart of any reforms. These changes must be implemented swiftly and carefully to protect teachers from the pressures of inspections. Only then can we create an environment where teachers feel valued and supported – instead of stressed and overwhelmed.

In the wake of this report, all stakeholders in education must take a stand against unnecessary workload and stress. This includes professional bodies, leaders and governors – all of whom must ensure teachers are supported, respected and valued. Doing so can create an environment where teaching can be safe, enjoyable and fruitful for countless future generations.
