Critics argue that by forcing young people to stay in traditional schools and study a subject they may not be interested in, Sunak needs to pay attention to the needs of those who want to pursue other paths, such as apprenticeships or alternative education programs. They argue that changing the age limit could put low-achieving students at a disadvantage and exclude them from future career opportunities.

The proposal has also been met with criticism from teachers and academics alike. Some argue that it would create a further strain on already under-resourced schools, and students would be forced to work through a subject they could not grasp at an earlier stage. There is also concern that it could lead to a decrease in the number of students who take up STEM subjects.

Ultimately, Sunak’s plan appears to be catering for one type of student – those with academic aspirations – while ignoring the needs of those whose strengths may lie elsewhere. Suppose he is serious about creating educational opportunities for all young people regardless of their socio-economic background and learning preferences. In that case, more must be done to ensure everyone has access to pathways that help them realise their ambitions.
