It is important to remember that the quality of a service does not necessarily reflect the conditions and experiences of those using it. In this case, the rating of ‘good’ failed to identify instances of abuse within these care homes. This highlights how even an successful system can still let vulnerable children down.

We must learn lessons from this situation and ensure that our systems are robust enough to detect any instances of physical or emotional harm. All organisations responsible for supporting young people should take the necessary steps to provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment.

No child should have to suffer abuse or neglect in any setting. We must ensure that all services are regularly and properly monitored and that any signs of physical violence or emotional distress are taken seriously and acted upon swiftly. Children’s welfare must always come first.

We also need to recognise the bravery of those individuals who have spoken out about their experiences of abuse in care homes rated ‘good’. It can be difficult for survivors of trauma or abuse to speak up, but it is essential to protect others from similar situations. By listening and responding appropriately, we can help survivors heal and ultimately create safer, more inclusive environments for all.

It is time to act now and ensure that our care services are held accountable and provide the support, protection, and respect every child deserves. All organisations responsible for safeguarding children must work together to create a safe and nurturing environment where young people can thrive.

What do you think of their experiences? What can be done to prevent it?
