Ban on Staff-Student Relationships in Australia

Universities Australia, the peak body for the sector, has proposed a ban on “intimate” relationships between staff and students. The proposal follows a review of policies at 40 universities which found that existing arrangements were inadequate to protect students from potential exploitation or abuse.

Under Universities Australia’s proposed policy, staff would be barred from engaging in intimate relationships with current students. This includes physical contact and even consensual sexual activity. It also applies to any close personal relationship that could create an imbalance of power due to the difference between student and staff positions.

The concern is that such relationships can result in favouritism, leading to unfair treatment of other students who do not enjoy such preferential access to faculty members. In addition, if the student-staff relationship breaks down, this can lead to distress and disruption for both parties.

If accepted, the proposal will align Australia with many other countries that have already introduced similar bans. It follows a series of high-profile scandals at universities worldwide involving staff members having inappropriate relationships with students.

Universities Australia’s proposed policy would need to be approved by each institution before it could be an effect. Such a ban would protect vulnerable students from exploitation or abuse. It remains to be seen whether or not the proposal will be accepted at all universities across Australia.

In the meantime, Universities Australia is encouraging universities to introduce additional measures to protect students from predatory staff members. These include providing appropriate training for staff on student-staff relationships and introducing an anonymous reporting system for incidents of inappropriate behaviour. It is hoped that such measures will help ensure a safe environment for all students at Australian universities.
