Applications Drop for Architecture Courses

The fall in applications from EU students to UK architecture courses has been dramatic since the Brexit vote. According to a report released by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), EU applicants for architecture courses were halved between 2017 and 2019. This means fewer students are taking up studies in this field, which could have far-reaching implications for the industry’s future.

In 2020, only 6% of RIBA-accredited school admissions comprised students from other EU countries. This is a sharp decrease compared to pre-Brexit years when around 12% of entries came from different parts of Europe. The report also highlighted several other factors, including the difficulties posed by visa application processes, language barriers and higher tuition fees.

The fall in the number of EU students considerably impacts the future of the architecture industry. Not only will schools need help to attract enough qualified students, but there is also a risk that fewer individuals will pursue a career in this field as they may be deterred by the prospect of having to study abroad or face tougher visa regulations. This could mean that the UK’s architectural workforce will become less diverse and innovative in years to come.

It remains to be seen what steps the government can take to address this issue and ensure that talented EU applicants can still pursue their dreams of studying architecture within the UK. For the sector to remain competitive and successful, universities must be able to attract high-quality students from Europe and beyond. Without the input of these individuals, the future of architecture in Britain could be at risk.

In conclusion, the sharp decline in EU student applications to UK architecture courses is a major cause for concern. It is important to address this issue to avoid serious consequences for universities and the architecture industry. It is, therefore, essential that measures are taken to ensure that talented students can still pursue studies in this field regardless of their country of origin or nationality.
