History of the Derby Education Department and the University
Over the years, two dozen bodies have contributed to the university’s formation. The first of these began in 1856 as the Derby Diocesan Institution for Training Schoolmistresses. Albeit under different names to reflect maturing objectives, the institution flourished as an individual entity for some 120 years before merging with another developing educational artery to help form what was then known as the Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education, 1977.
The Derbyshire College of Higher Education became the only school of higher education in the country to be upgraded directly to a university. After a series of mergers, the University of Derby was the university to be established in 1992.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate a good understanding of your chosen subject area, previous experience in the field and clear aims and objectives for the future in your personal statement.

This award is designed to reward those applying for a course at Derby who has contributed or is looking too in the future contributes to social change or impact projects in the community. This can take on any form, but the most important aspect is improving the lives of individuals in need.
You may have a particular project in mind you are currently involved in. It must affect the life chances of individuals or groups within your community. If the above can apply to something you deliver (or are in the planning stages), you are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.
According to the impact of this particular project, a maximum award of up to 20% of total fees can be awarded to an individual. Of course, it isn’t easy to compare students’ academic success from different countries, but we look to see where students have achieved academic excellence despite their backgrounds. If the above can apply to your background, you are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.
