Universities Under Investigation After Grade Inflation

The Office for Students (OfS) is investigating three universities following a sharp increase in the number of first and upper-second-class grades awarded to students. This is the first time the OfS has used its new powers to probe institutions over grade inflation. The regulator refused to name the universities under investigation on Friday but said it would provide further details in due course.

The OfS said it had “identified potential concerns that require further scrutiny” at the institutions. However, it stressed that its investigations were ongoing and no conclusions had been reached at this stage.

The news concerns grade inflation in the UK Higher Education sector. Earlier this year, a report by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) found that the proportion of students awarded first-class degrees had increased by 50% since 2010.

The OfS has said that it is monitoring the situation closely and will take action if necessary to protect the quality and standards of degrees in the UK. According to the BBC, the OfS is also investigating whether universities are inflating grades to meet government targets.

The investigation comes as the Higher Education sector in the UK faces increasing scrutiny and pressure from the government. Universities have been accused of failing to deliver value for money, and there are calls for a radical reform of the system.

The news will add to the challenges facing universities, and it remains to be seen what action the OfS will take if it finds evidence of grade inflation.

The Ofs director, Nicola Dandridge, said: \”We have been clear that we will not hesitate to use our new powers if we see evidence of wrongdoing.

\”The sector needs to be alert to the risk of grade inflation and take action to protect the value of students\’ degrees.\”
