Teacher Training Market Reduced by 25%

Around 25 per cent of teacher training providers could be culled from the market following the conclusion of a controversial government shake-up of the initial teacher training (ITT) sector, Tes understands. A total of 179 ITT providers have been approved to continue offering courses to trainees after 99 organisations passed the second and final reaccreditation round, Tes has learned.

The successful providers – set to be revealed by the government tomorrow – will join the 80 providers awarded accreditation after round one in offering ongoing teacher training in England, following a reduction in overall funding for ITT courses.

 

The latest figures represent a significant shrinking of the ITT market, with around 100 fewer providers set to offer courses next year compared to this year.

 

The ongoing reduction in the number of ITT providers is likely to cause concern among teaching unions and other education experts, who have warned that the further contraction of the market could limit trainees’ choice of courses and make it harder for some would-be teachers to find a place on a system.

 

The government has defended the reaccreditation process, arguing that it is necessary to ensure that only high-quality providers can continue offering teacher training courses.

The latest figures come after the government recently announced plans to axe several ITT providers rated ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted.

 

It is not yet known how many of the organisations approved to continue offering teacher training courses are new entrants to the market and how many existing providers have gone through the reaccreditation process. Still, according to the latest figures from the Department for Education (DfE), around two-thirds of the organisations that have been accredited are new entrants.

 

The DfE has also said it is working with several ITT providers that have not been successful in the latest round of reaccreditation to help them improve their quality and apply in the future.

 

In total, around 1,400 provider applications were received by the DfE during the first round of reaccreditation, with just over half (80) being successful. One thousand two hundred applications were received during the second round, with just under half (99) successful.

 

The Department for Education is expected to publish the full list of approved ITT providers tomorrow.
