For aspiring teachers starting their training in September 2023, bursaries worth £27,000 and scholarships worth £29,000 will draw talented trainees into the highest-priority STEM (science, technology and mathematics) subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing.

£25,000 bursaries and £27,000 scholarships will be offered to prospective language teachers – up £10,000 on this academic year’s levels. These include French, German, Spanish, Italian and modern languages such as Mandarin and Arabic.

The funding will be available to cover the full cost of tuition fees and maintenance costs for eligible trainees.

The move comes as the government prepares to launch a major recruitment campaign later this year to attract more people into teaching. The campaign will inspire individuals from a wide range of backgrounds to consider teaching a rewarding career with attractive salaries and benefits, including flexible working patterns.

The government is also introducing a new ‘gold standard teacher training programme, providing high-quality training and development for all new professional entrants. This will include a year-long paid teaching placement, intensive support from an expert mentor, and access to world-class resources and facilities.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the plans during his visit to a school in Gateshead today (Thursday, 8 April).

He said:

“I want to ensure that we have the best possible teachers in our classrooms so that we will invest £10 million in teacher training bursaries from next year.

“This will mean that we can offer up to £27,000 to trainee maths teachers, up to £29,000 for physics and chemistry, and up to £25,000 for languages.

“It is vital that we have a world-class education system that gives everyone the chance to succeed, regardless of their background. We are also introducing a new ‘gold standard teacher training programme, which will provide high-quality training and development for all new professional entrants.”

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

“We want to ensure that teaching is an attractive career option for the brightest and best graduates so that they can pass on their knowledge and expertise to the next generation.

“That is why we are increasing the money available through bursaries and scholarships and introducing a new ‘gold standard teacher training programme. This will help us attract more high-calibre individuals into the profession and ensure that our education system prepares young people for success in an increasingly competitive global economy.”

The government is also investing £10 million in a new fund to support outstanding teachers who want to move into leadership roles. This will provide funding for professional development opportunities, such as mentoring and coaching, and financial assistance with relocation costs.
