The report from the Higher Education Commission says that many students are not aware of the employment outcomes of their courses before they start studying.

This lack of information can lead to students choosing courses not suited to their career aspirations and can result in them taking on too much debt.

The commission’s chairman, Sir David Melville, said universities needed to be “much more transparent” about job prospects.

“At the moment, there is a lot of information available on university websites, but it is often hidden away and difficult to find,” he said.

“We must ensure that students are armed with the right information when deciding their course choice. That means making sure they know what jobs they can expect once they graduate and how much debt they will face.”

The commission has called for universities to make this information clearer and more accessible by providing it in prospectuses or on university websites.

It also wants universities to provide better advice and guidance services so that prospective students can access all the information they need before choosing a course.

Sir David said: “We want our universities to be places where knowledge is shared, not withheld – and this should include career prospects.”

The report has been welcomed by student groups, who say that it could help ensure students are more informed when making their course choices.

Gareth Kirk, President of the National Union of Students, said: “Having access to accurate and detailed information about job prospects is vital for any student considering higher education. With this report, we can ensure that students can make informed decisions about their future.”

The commission’s recommendations will help to give students a clearer understanding of what jobs they could expect after graduation and enable them to make better-informed decisions about their future.
