Through a £700 million investment over the next three years, the Department of Education is committed to transforming SEND services across England by improving local and national access. This will involve creating an integrated provision system from birth through adolescence, meaning families can receive better-tailored advice and support throughout their child’s life.

The government also intends to introduce a new system for assessing eligibility for specialist help at an early stage so that interventions are made as soon as possible. This will involve local authorities in the assessment process and introduce new criteria for assessing a child’s needs.

In addition, the government plans to move away from an over-reliance on Statement of SEN (SEN) documents and give parents more choices. This will be achieved by increasing competition amongst providers, improving information and advice for parents to make informed choices, and making it easier for families to access individualised funding options.

The Department of Education is committed to ensuring that all children with special educational needs receive the support they need as soon as possible. These ambitious plans are designed to revolutionise SEND services across England. With a focus on early intervention, individualised funding options, improved information and advice provision, and increased competition amongst providers, the UK Government is improving access to services for children with special educational needs.

The Department of Education has said it will continue to monitor progress on these reforms over the next three years, ensuring that all children with special educational needs can get the help they need. This is crucial in improving outcomes for children with SEND and their families.
