This coming school calendar year, Superintendent Tony Watlington’s second in office, he explained he has major aspirations for the district. This bus tour will established the tone, he reported.
District staff members and volunteers on the tour provided family members assist with university registration, gave out absolutely free backpacks and university materials, organized immunizations, and shared data about university scheduling. The district’s first day of university for virtually 114,000 pupils will be Sept. 5.
Neighborhood businesses and town company organizations also set up tables at the celebration to enable families know about SEPTA public transportation offerings for college students, net company guidance, situations at general public library branches, and other methods.
This is Watlington’s next yr kicking off the tour. But it is a scaled-down model of the 2021 again-to-college tour, which created 31 stops all-around the metropolis. This 12 months, the bus tour will make 11 stops and will run by way of Friday, Aug. 18.

The tour is funded via a $150,000 grant from the Independence Blue Cross Foundation.
Parents Michelle and Wayne Jones explained they are grateful the district is earning an exertion to hook up with households. Wayne graduated from Martin Luther King Substantial College in 1980 and has a daughter Giavonni who is about to start fourth grade in the district.
“It’s a wonderful factor,” Jones explained, “to see my school obtaining one thing for the neighborhood.”
Priscilla Howard — the guardian for Jada and Jayden Whipple, two learners in the district — explained the tour has saved her revenue on backpacks. Howard explained the party is particularly essential for her relatives and neighbors in the Black community who have struggled less than what the city has known as generations of “disinvestment” and “structural racism.”
