Pupil Absences Remain High From Circumstance

Although many schools have been able to reopen in some capacity, pupil absences remain above pre-Covid levels. This is particularly evident amongst certain groups of students, such as those from disadvantaged backgrounds and with disabilities. Low-income families are more likely to be adversely affected by the economic impacts of the pandemic, leading to increased absences due to illness or lack of access to childcare. Moreover, learning loss associated with disrupted schooling can lead to disengagement if not addressed effectively.

Schools should take proactive steps to ensure that pupils at risk of missing out on their education do not fall behind. Measures such as providing extra support for home learning and offering catch-up classes and mentoring programmes could help to bridge the gap between those who can attend school regularly and those who cannot. In addition, efforts should be made to ensure that vulnerable students have access to appropriate mental health services and support networks.

A holistic approach is needed for schools to effectively address pupil absences in a post-Covid world. We must not shy away from this difficult challenge but instead take steps towards creating an education system that provides equal opportunities for all. Only then can we hope to see pupil absences return to pre-Covid levels?
