University support staff in England have had a pay breakthrough, resulting in the cancellation of planned strikes. The agreement was reached between members of the University and College Union (UCU) and Universities UK (UUK), the representative body for universities across the country.

The breakthrough comes after months of negotiations over staff pay, pensions, and workloads. Talks were held following a series of walkouts last year by university staff who were protesting against what they claimed was an “unfair pay deal” for university employees.
The new agreement will see all academic-related staff receive a minimum 2% salary increase from August 2019, with many higher earners receiving an even bigger rise. It also includes improvements to maternity benefits and more clarity on casual contracts.
The new agreement is a major victory for university staff, who had been left frustrated and undervalued in light of rising costs and stagnating salaries. It is also seen as an important step towards addressing higher education inequality, particularly concerning pay and conditions.
Members of UCU have welcomed the breakthrough, saying it will make a real difference in their lives. They are hopeful that this could start a new era of fairness and respect for university staff across England. The union’s joint general secretary Jo Grady said: “This deal represents a huge victory for our members who were determined to fight for better pay, pensions and equality in our universities.”
