The program allowed schools to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to all students since last March, regardless of family income or whether they qualified for other assistance programs such as free and reduced-price meals. Without this program, the burden of providing meals rests solely on parents’ shoulders.

For many households, this will be challenging to do. A survey conducted by No Kid Hungry found that 56 per cent of households who responded said they have had difficulty affording enough food for their families since the start of the pandemic.

To combat this problem, Congress recently passed a bill that expands the free and reduced-price meals program for struggling families. The legislation also includes $3 billion in funding to help states cover costs associated with providing these meals during the pandemic. This money will provide much-needed relief for many households struggling to put food on the table.

While this new legislation is a step in the right direction, more is needed to meet the growing need of families affected by Covid-19. Some experts call on states and local communities to do more and create innovative solutions to address hunger during this unprecedented time.

No matter what approach is taken, one thing is certain: the pandemic has drastically increased the need for food assistance, and something must be done to ensure families don’t go hungry.

It will be up to communities nationwide to come together and provide support. Whether launching a local food drive or volunteering at a local food pantry, there are many ways people can make a difference. Together we can help ensure no child goes to bed hungry tonight.
