Rachel Saunders, 53, was found dead at her home just days after being informed of the damning verdict on Wheatley Hill Primary School in County Durham. The independent report commissioned by her family described her as “a very successful headteacher” who received considerable praise from parents and pupils for her work.

However, despite this positive feedback, an Ofsted visit to the school judged its performance as inadequate and placed it into special measures. Her family believe the findings were unjustified and created significant stress and mental anguish for Rachel.

They argue that the Ofsted regime is fatally flawed and can cause serious damage to school staff, with severe consequences in some cases. They are now calling for an urgent review of the system, urging Ofsted to take greater account of schools’ histories and local contexts when deciding on performance levels.

The family have also called on government ministers to introduce measures to ensure that headteachers and other school staff receive more support in times of stress. The tragedy has sparked a national debate about how inspection regimes are implemented and whether they are doing enough to protect those at the frontline of education.

Rachel’s family said in a statement: “We are determined to make sure that no other headteachers suffer the same experience in future. We want to ensure an urgent review of the Ofsted inspection system and for the Department for Education to take action on protecting school staff from extreme stress.”

Rachel’s story has served to highlight how important it is for schools to receive fair and accurate inspections and provide vital support for those leading them. There must be changes made to stop similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

What measures are being proposed to ensure that headteachers and other school staff receive more support in times of stress?
