As a result of the planned industrial action, special schools in Northern Ireland may have to close. The Department of Education has said it is working with the Department of Health and social care trusts to minimise the strike’s impact on children and young people with special educational needs.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said: “We are aware of the potential impact of this industrial action on children and young people with special educational needs and are working closely with the Department of Health and social care trusts to minimise any disruption.”

The RCN has advised parents of children with special needs who require medical care to make alternative arrangements on Thursday, 12th December 2019. Please get in touch with your child’s school or the Department of Education for more information.

According to the Department of Education, around 1% of pupils in Northern Ireland attend special schools. This means that approximately 2,500 children and young people with special needs could be affected by the planned industrial action.

The Royal College of Nursing is the largest nursing union in the United Kingdom. It represents more than 430,000 nurses, student nurses and health care assistants across the UK.

In a statement, the RCN said: “This dispute is about ensuring safe staffing levels for patients, which is why our members are taking this step.”

The Department of Health has said it “remains committed to finding a resolution to this dispute”.
