Numbers of Chinese Students in the US Drops

US universities are facing a sharp fall in the number of Chinese students enrolling for the 2022 academic year. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, during the first half of 2022, US student visas for Chinese nationals dropped more than 50 per cent compared with pre-pandemic levels.

In the first six months of 2021, just over 23,000 student visas were issued to Chinese nationals, compared with nearly 60,000 in the same period last year.

The decrease is attributed to various factors, including the coronavirus pandemic and increasingly stringent visa requirements for Chinese students.

It is also likely that many Chinese students are choosing to study elsewhere, such as in Canada or Australia, which are seen as more welcoming to international students.

The decline in Chinese students comes as a blow to US universities, which rely heavily on the income generated by international students.

According to the Institute of International Education, in 2019-20, Chinese students contributed $15 billion to the US economy through their spending on tuition, room and board, and other expenses.

The decrease in Chinese students is also likely to knock on the US job market, as many of these students work in the country after graduation.

There are currently more than one million Chinese students studying at universities worldwide, making them the largest group of international students.

However, if the trend of declining numbers continues, it could have a significant impact on the global higher education landscape.

According to UNESCO, international students contribute around $150 billion annually to the global economy.

If the decline in Chinese students studying in the US continues, it will likely have a significant impact on this figure.

Also, if Chinese students choose to study elsewhere, it could lead to a brain drain from the US, as many of these students are highly skilled and educated.

The decline in Chinese students comes as the US-China relationship continues to deteriorate.

In recent years, there has been an increase in anti-Chinese sentiment in the US, with some politicians and members of the public accusing China of stealing American jobs and intellectual property.

This has led to a decrease in the number of Chinese tourists visiting the US and a decline in business investment from China.

The Trump administration also put restrictions on visas for Chinese citizens, which will likely deter students from coming to study in the US.

In addition, the international relations between the US and China are likely to be affected by the decline in Chinese students studying in the US.

The two countries have been locked in a trade war for several years, and the decline in Chinese students studying in the US will likely add to tensions between the two nations.
