New Covid-19 Booster Vaccine Approved

Britain on Monday became the first country to authorise a coronavirus booster vaccine that targets two variants, the original virus and Omicron, the variant that became dominant over the winter.

Half of each dose of the Moderna-made vaccine will target the original variant, and the other half will target Omicron. In clinical trials, the vaccine, an updated version of Moderna’s initial Covid vaccine, generated a good immune response to both viruses.

The vaccine, expected to be available in the U.K. in the coming weeks, is a booster shot meant to be given to people who have already received one dose of a Covid vaccine.

Unlike the original Moderna vaccine, used in the U.S. last December, the new version does not need to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures. That will make it easier to transport and administer, especially in developing countries.

The U.K.’s decision to authorise the Moderna vaccine comes as other European countries are struggling to contain outbreaks of the Omicron variant, which is more contagious than the original virus and has been linked to a small increase in severe illness and death.

The U.K. has ordered 10 million doses of the vaccine to vaccinate 5 million people. The first doses are expected to be delivered in April. Moderna is also manufacturing a similar booster vaccine for the United States.

With the vaccine, “we now have a way to fight back against this new variant.” said vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi. The U.K. has ordered 10 million doses of the vaccine to vaccinate 5 million people. The first doses are expected to be delivered in April. Moderna is also manufacturing a similar booster vaccine for the United States.

The new vaccine is a booster shot meant to be given to people who have already received one dose of a Covid vaccine. It is not yet clear how long the protection from the booster shot will last.

Further research is needed to determine the long-term effectiveness of the new vaccine. In the meantime, people must continue to follow public health guidelines, including wearing masks, social distancing, and regularly washing hands.
