Meta-data Responsible for Invading Children Privacy

The US Federal Trade Commission has warned that meta-data disclosure laws put children at risk of identity theft, financial fraud and other malicious activities. Metadata is information associated with a specific item or entity, such as an email address, phone number, IP address or location. This data can be used to create detailed profiles about individuals and their behavior which criminals can exploit for illegal purposes. The FTC said that the current law does not require companies to ensure this metadata is adequately secured so it cannot be accessed by those who should not have it.

The FTC has urged parents to be mindful of their children’s online activities and what information they are providing and monitor the types of sites they are visiting. It also called on companies that collect metadata to have strong security measures protecting kid’s personal information.

Ultimately, the FTC said that it is important to balance protecting kids from risks posed by metadata disclosure laws and giving them access to websites and apps that can benefit them. It stressed that more needs to be done to ensure that both parents and companies understand the need for security when collecting this type of sensitive information about children.

The FTC’s warning reminds parents and companies alike to take extra precautions when protecting children from threats posed by metadata disclosure. Parents should educate themselves on how their kids are using the internet and what information they are providing. At the same time, companies should take measures to ensure that any metadata they collect is properly secured. By taking these steps, we can help protect our kids online.

What measures can parents and companies take to ensure that any metadata collected is properly secured?
