The Welsh Government’s Higher Education Mini ster, Julie James, said the impact of Brexit on research funding was “one of her biggest concerns”.

Ms James told BBC Radio Wales’ Sunday Supplement programme that the Welsh Government was working with the UK government to try and mitigate the impact.

She said: “It is one of my biggest concerns at the moment, the potential impact of Brexit on our higher education sector, specifically around research funding.

“We know that a lot of our research in Wales is funded by the European Union – about 20% across the sector – and so as we face the end of the transition period and the potential loss of that funding, unless there is an agreement to replace it, then we could be facing a real problem.”

Ms James said she was working with universities in Wales to “mitigate some of the risks around jobs”. She said: “Job losses have already hit the sector. We are looking for ways to mitigate that risk and make sure that we don’t lose more jobs in the future.”

The Welsh Government is also pushing for more funding for research from other sources, such as UK research councils and industry. Ms James added: “We need to look at different ways of supporting our higher education institutions and their researchers so they can continue their work. That’s something we’re working on.”

It is hoped that any job losses can be minimised, but the impact of Brexit will remain uncertain until a formal agreement is reached between the UK and EU. In the meantime, Welsh universities are exploring ways to compensate for a potential loss in research funding.
