Investments Soar for Language Teaching

This is great news for students who are passionate about learning languages. With the right support from their schools, they will have access to high-quality language teaching to help them excel at GCSE and A levels. This will, in turn, open up more opportunities for them in the future, whether they want to study abroad or work in a foreign country. Languages are a valuable asset in today’s globalised world, and this investment will ensure that more students can benefit from learning them.

Students from disadvantaged backgrounds will particularly benefit from this programme, as they are often less likely to have access to high-quality language teaching. This investment will help close the gap between them and their more affluent peers, giving them a level playing field when applying for university or jobs.

According to Ian Bauckham’s 2016 Modern Foreign Languages Pedagogy Review, leading schools in language teaching will form a new Centre of Excellence. This centre will be comprised of up to 25 schools which will work together to improve the standard of language teaching across the country. The programme will be backed by £14.9 million over the next three years, potentially extending it to other languages if successful.

Minister for Schools, Nick Gibb, said: “We want as many pupils as possible to benefit from learning a language and this investment will ensure that thousands more students have access to high-quality language teaching.

“Languages are a valuable asset in today’s globalised world, and this government is committed to ensuring that more young people can learn one.”

The programme is part of the government’s wider plans to boost the number of pupils taking languages at GCSE and A level, which includes an £8 million investment in primary school language teaching and a new Languages for the Future fund. These initiatives will help create a pipeline of talent for businesses and universities that need linguists now and in the future.

This is a welcome investment in language learning, which will benefit students nationwide. By ensuring that more young people have access to high-quality language teaching, we can help them develop the skills they need to succeed in a globalised world.
