Illinois lawmakers to maintain listening to on revised draft map for Chicago elected school board in advance of achievable vote

Illinois lawmakers unveiled a new draft map for Chicago’s before long-to-be-elected school board at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday forward of a hearing scheduled for this night.

Their initial proposal for dividing Chicago into 20 districts for the city’s school board elections that start in 2024 was met with criticism for underrepresenting Latino families, who make up 46.5% of Chicago Community Educational facilities pupil populace. 

The new draft tinkers with 3 districts where no racial or ethnic team has a 50% the vast majority, tilting two of those people in favor of Latinos.  

In the most up-to-date iteration, seven districts have a population that is 50% or much more Black, five in which Latinos make up 50% or far more of the population, and 5 exactly where the populace is 50% or extra white. Two districts have a Latino plurality, in which about 40% of the inhabitants is Latino, and a person has a white plurality.  Previously, two districts experienced a white plurality and one experienced a Latino plurality. 

Chicago’s population is 33% white, 29% Latino, and 29% Black, but the school district’s college student population is 46.5% Latino, 36% Black, 11% white, and 4% Asian American
