Qualifications Wales is also asking for feedback on names for several new subjects. These include GCSE in the sciences and GCSE core Cymraeg. The reforms include controversial plans to merge language and literature into a single GCSE, and individual science subjects will be combined into one qualification.

The changes are part of a larger review of qualifications, which began in 2019.

Education Minister Kirsty Williams said the reforms would ensure \”young people in Wales have access to world-class education and training that meets their needs and our economy\”.

\”I am clear that any new qualifications must be fit for purpose, provide all young people with an excellent grounding for their future and be supported by high-quality teaching,\” she said.

Ms Williams added that the plans put \”digital technology at the heart of everything we do\”. \”This is an ambitious but necessary reform programme that will ensure our education system meets the challenges of the future,\” she said. But Plaid Cymru\’s education spokesperson Llyr Gruffydd said the plans were \”more of the same\” from the Welsh Government.

\”This is a Labour government that has been in power for over two decades, yet they continue to rely on qualifications that were designed over 60 years ago,\” he said. \”The world has changed immeasurably since then, but our education system largely remains the same.\” Mr Gruffydd said there was a \”clear need\” for reform but argued that the Welsh Government\’s plans did not go far enough.
