CSPRP Releases Reviews on Child Safeguarding

The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel (CSPRP) has undertaken a third national review of child safeguarding practice. This follows the first and second reviews conducted in 2013 and 2015. The CSPRP is an independent panel that advises ministers on improving child safeguarding practices in England. The Panel comprises child protection experts from various professional backgrounds, including social work, policing, health, education, and academia.

The third national review was commissioned by the Department for Education in September 2017 and was conducted over six months. The CSPRP consulted widely with professionals and organisations across England to gather evidence for the review.

The Panel’s report was published on 6 June 2018. It makes several recommendations for improving child safeguarding practice, which is below.

The CSPRP’s third national review found that:

– There have been significant improvements in child safeguarding practice since the Panel’s last review in 2015, but there is still more to do to ensure that all children are safe from harm.

– Most organisations and professionals consulted by the CSPRP were positive about recent changes to child safeguarding practice, including the introduction of new statutory guidance (Working Together to Safeguard Children, 2016) and the establishment of a new National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for Child Protection.

– However, some organisations and professionals raised concerns that the pace of change has been too slow and that not all children benefit from recent improvements.

– There is a need for better information-sharing between agencies and professionals to ensure that children at risk of harm are identified and helped as early as possible.

– There is also a need for more consistent application of child safeguarding practice across England to ensure that all children receive the same level of protection regardless of where they live.

The CSPRP’s third national review makes several recommendations for improving child safeguarding practice in England. These include:

– Providing more support for frontline professionals to have the knowledge and skills needed to safeguard children effectively.

– Improving information-sharing between agencies and professionals to ensure that children at risk of harm are identified and helped as early as possible.

– Developing a more consistent approach to child safeguarding across England to ensure that all children receive the same level of protection regardless of where they live.
