Contracts for Memphis Shelby County Colleges safety updates await board approval

Memphis-Shelby County Colleges would shell out up to $6.3 million to bolster protection in the district’s faculties less than a pair of contracts awaiting board approval.

The contracts with Memphis-centered Oteka Technologies LLC contact for spending about $807,000 on safety technologies — like cameras, intercoms, servers, program licenses, and intrusion alarm methods — and $5.5 million for upgraded wiring to assistance it all, according to board documents. 

The board’s Audit, Finances, and Finance Committee permitted the contracts Thursday. 

“Utilizing this technologies in the classroom supports an more layer of safety” and will aid protect learners and personnel, the district reported in the paperwork, citing a rise in mass shootings and lively-shooter incidents.

“Replacing discontinued intrusion alarm units during the district and upgrading cameras will boost the setting up entry systems to be certain doorways are locked and secured at all periods,” the doc said.

The proposed protection updates come as Gov. Monthly bill Lee pushes a college security monthly bill that would threaten university districts with penalties if their schools are identified to have entrances that are left unlocked.

Individually, the finance committee permitted a $349,165 deal to another Memphis-centered firm, Barnes & Brower Inc., to fix the ceiling for the library at Cummings K-8 Optional University.

The library’s 40-year-previous fall ceiling collapsed in August 2022, injuring 3 staffers. The school’s 300 pupils were relocated to nearby LaRose Elementary School.

The incident drew awareness to MSCS’s growing old school properties. About 33 of them are at least 70 several years old.
