Chinese Borders to be Opened for Students

China Admissions, a student service platform based in Beijing, is reporting a gradual opening of the Chinese border for international students. This follows a 21 July statement by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who said at the time that all international students could return to China to continue their studies according to their wishes.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sounded more cautious immediately after the Premier’s statement, with spokesperson Wang Wenbin saying that any such return would have to follow “relevant policies and measures” set by the Chinese government.

The news will come as a relief to many international students who have been anxiously awaiting word on when they might be able to return to China. The COVID-19 pandemic has upended plans for many students worldwide, and China’s border closure has been in place since late March.

It remains unclear when exactly the border will reopen and what the conditions for entry will be. However, China Admissions reports that several universities in China have already begun preparations for international students’ return.

In addition, the website notes that the Chinese government has been working on several initiatives to make it easier for international students to study in China, including the launch of a new “fast-track” visa process and the introduction of scholarships specifically for international students.

It is still early, but the news offers hope for international students eager to return to China and continue their studies. We will continue to follow this story and update you as more information becomes available.
