Charities Work Together to Help Vulnerable Children

A group of five charities have called on the next prime minister to take action to improve the care system for vulnerable children in England.

The charities, including Barnardo\’s and NSPCC, say that flawed care leads to children being \”seriously hurt or even killed\”. They call on Tory leadership rivals Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak to change the system.

The Conservatives promised to change the care system in their 2019 manifesto. It said: \”We will review the care system to ensure that all care placements and settings are providing children and young adults with the support they need.\”

However, little progress has been made on these promises, and the charities say that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable children.

In particular, they are calling for an end to the use of unregistered settings for care, better training and oversight for social workers, and an improved system for investigating complaints about care.

The next prime minister must act quickly to make these changes, as the care system is failing too many vulnerable children.

In addition, the number of children in care is rising and is expected to reach 100,000 in the next ten years. This means that more children than ever will need high-quality care if they are to thrive.

The charities are therefore calling on the next prime minister to make improving the care system a priority and to invest in it accordingly. Only by doing so will vulnerable children be given the best possible chance in life.

In a letter written by the charities and seen by the BBC, they say: \”It is clear that the care system in England is not currently working well enough for too many children.

\”This is resulting in some children being seriously hurt or even killed. We are therefore calling on the next prime minister to make improving the care system a priority.\”

The letter says that the care system should be \”fit for purpose\” and that this can only be achieved if the government makes a \”sustained investment\” in it.

It also calls on the next prime minister to appoint a cabinet minister with responsibility for children\’s social care to ensure that the issue is given sufficient attention at the highest level.

The letter has been signed by the chief executives of Barnardo\’s, NSPCC, Action for Children, The Who Cares? Trust, and Coram.

In response to the letter, a Department for Education spokesperson said: \”Every child deserves to be safe and loved, and we are committed to making sure they get the best possible start in life.

\”That is why we have committed to reviewing the care system, to ensure that all care placements and settings are providing children and young adults with the support they need.\”

The spokesperson added that the department was working with local authorities to increase the recruitment of foster carers and investing £3bn (US$3.9bn) in children\’s social care over the next three years.

However, the charities say that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable children and that the next prime minister must prioritise improving the care system. Only by doing so will all children in England be given the best possible start in life.
