20 per cent of Parents Struggle to provide Necessities

One in five parents struggles to provide necessities for their children, and books are often among the items that get cut. To combat this issue, several initiatives are available to help ensure that all children have access to books. Many libraries nationwide offer free or discounted memberships so families can borrow books without spending extra money. Additionally, organisations like First Book provide new books directly to schools in need at deeply discounted prices. Even programs distribute book “libraries” to low-income communities, allowing families to “check out” books just like they would at a regular library.

While these initiatives are helping to provide more equitable access to books for all children, there is still work to be done. Parents can also play an important role in supporting their children’s reading habits by ensuring they can access age-appropriate materials. This could mean visiting the local library or using free online resources such as Project Gutenberg or Open Library. It’s also important for parents to take time out of their busy schedules and read with their kids—even if it’s just 10 minutes every night—as this has been shown to increase reading levels and help foster a lifelong love of books.

Providing children with access to books is essential for their academic success and overall growth and development. By taking advantage of the initiatives available and setting aside time to read with our kids, we can help create a brighter future for all.
