Studies on Mental Health Interventions

School mental health interventions are strategies that educators and school psychologists can use to support students’ emotional, behavioral, and social well-being. These strategies range from providing classroom guidance activities and individual counselling to implementing long-term prevention programs. Each intervention has its own unique set of objectives and goals. Still, all aim to address the underlying psychological needs of each student to help them develop their fullest potential.

Interventions commonly focus on reducing conflict between students, encouraging healthy behaviour choices, helping students develop better self-esteem and coping skills, increasing academic performance, improving relationships with peers and adults in the school setting, and promoting positive attitudes towards learning. Examples of strategies used include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), problem-solving skills training (PSST), social skills training (SST), anger management, and mindfulness-based practices. CBT is a type of psychotherapy that addresses thoughts and behaviours by identifying patterns to reduce distress and improve functioning. PSST helps students identify problems they face and develop strategies for solving them. SST teaches students how to interact with others more effectively, while anger management promotes healthy ways of expressing emotions. Mindfulness-based practices help promote self-awareness, relaxation, stress reduction, improved concentration and focus, and improved emotional regulation.

School mental health interventions can be used individually or in groups depending on the needs of the student(s). The effectiveness of these interventions relies on the level of commitment from all participants, including school personnel and the student(s). When properly implemented, school mental health interventions can positively impact students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral functioning. They can also decrease risk factors for mental health issues in the future and help create a safe learning environment for all students.

Overall, school mental health interventions offer an opportunity to support students’ emotional well-being through targeted strategies tailored to meet each student’s individual needs. Educators can create a more welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students by implementing these strategies in schools. With this approach, educators can foster meaningful relationships with their students while providing the tools necessary to develop healthy coping skills that will benefit them in the future.
