Outdoor Education for a New Student Experience

 Lucy, a 10-year-old student from Coten End Primary School in Warwickshire, is currently staying at the Arete Outdoor Centre in Llanrug, Gwynedd. She is taking part in a series of outdoor challenges and says she thinks it\’s something everyone should experience.

Gareth Davies, who manages the centre, believes that the perseverance and resilience that pupils need during their stay will stand them in good stead for the future.

The Senedd will debate a proposal by one of its members that all school children in Wales should be given a week at an outdoor education centre. This could provide them with valuable skills and experiences that they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to gain.

According to Davies, \”Outdoor education is not about giving children a week off. It\’s about challenging them and developing their resilience.\”

He believes that this type of education can positively impact pupils\’ futures, helping them to succeed in whatever they choose to do.

A report by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Social Mobility and Opportunity recommended that all schools in England should offer outdoor education as part of the curriculum.

It is hoped that the debate in the Senedd will lead to a similar outcome in Wales, giving all children the opportunity to benefit from outdoor education.
