NASUWT Scotland plans to ballot its members from 27 October to 9 January, and the EIS teaching union, representing around 80% of teachers in Scotland, started balloting members last week. That ballot will run until 8 November.

The EIS is advising members to vote in favour of striking. Seamus Searson, the general secretary of the EIS, said: “Teachers are angry and frustrated at the failure of the Scottish government to value their work and dedication or invest in their profession.”

The SSTA said it would decide on strike action after the ballot results are known.

Scottish government ministers have urged all three teaching unions to “reconsider” their plans for industrial action. A spokesperson said: “We have been very clear that we value the contribution of our teachers and have offered them a pay rise which will see an increase in the starting salary to £26,000 by August 2021.”

The SSTA represents around 8,500 secondary teachers in Scotland.

Through this ballot, the SSTA joins the other two major teaching unions in Scotland, who have already announced their intention to take industrial action over pay and conditions. This comes after the Scottish government failed to meet the union’s demands for a 10% pay rise for all teachers.
