This pay cut has had serious implications on both the recruitment and retention of teachers. With wages not keeping up with inflation, fewer people are choosing to pursue a teaching career as it no longer provides them with enough financial stability or comfort. Those who are already teaching also feel less secure about their jobs as they cannot rely on salary progression over time.

The impact of this situation can be felt from the classroom level right up to governance structures within schools, where decisions are increasingly focused on budgeting, cost-cutting and efficiency rather than on educational outcomes. This can lead to a lack of resources, increased workloads and lower levels of job satisfaction for teachers.

The government must take action in order to protect the welfare of teachers across all school levels. A long-term investment in teacher salaries will ensure that qualified individuals are attracted to teaching positions and that those already working in the profession have stability and job satisfaction. Improved wages also mean more money spent within local communities, creating economic growth and better equipped schools with improved education standards for our children.

It’s time for the government to reverse this worrying trend by investing properly in teacher pay, so we can continue to attract and retain quality teachers who can help to ensure the best possible education for our children.

This is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed urgently in order to protect the welfare of teachers, and, ultimately the quality of our school system. It’s time for action on teacher pay now!
